Introduction & Rationale : Student previously practiced making the connection between words and images to create comic strips or covers, our lesson was an addition to the previous comic lesson in order to help students add an additional multimodal element to their work: sounds! This combination of media can help students bring their creativity to life in a very unique way. Students created a final product that demonstrated their understanding of the relationship between technology and text through a process that is both meaningful and personalized. In this lesson, students made connections in various media literacy skills. Using Scratch, the students were able to create recordings of dialogue as well as sound effects to accompany their comic or comic book cover. Makey-Makey was combined with the online coding program Scratch. This tool allows students to create “buttons” that will respond with any sound that they choose or create themselves. This is exactly why we chose to use the Makey-Makey tool. We decided to make buttons out of parts of the comic strips. Some students wanted to create dialogue among characters, others wanted to make sound effects so that their action scenes felt more real. One of the ways to make a text come to life is to add sound and voice elements. They looked amazing, but our students were interested in making theirs come to life. ![]() Some created a comic book cover, and others created a short multipanel comic strip. Abstract: Students have spent time creating their own comics.
